Book Review – Bookman Dead Style by Paige Shelton

Happy release day to BOOKMAN DEAD STYLE by Paige Shelton! This is the 2nd book in the “Dangerous Type Mystery” series. I had the privilege to read and review an early copy of the 1st book in this series, To Helvetica and Back, and I jumped at the chance to read an advanced copy of the 2nd book. This is a cozy type mystery meaning while a murder and a few crimes were committed, the book is neither gory nor scary.  The perfect book for someone looking to dip a toe into mysteries.

Goodreads Description:

A movie star is typecast as a killer in the second Dangerous Type Mystery from the New York Times bestselling author of To Helvetica and Back.

It’s January, and the Star City Film Festival has taken the Utah ski resort town by storm. Movie stars are everywhere, carving fresh powder on the slopes and crossing the thresholds of Bygone Alley’s charming boutique shops—including The Rescued Word, where Clare Henry and her grandfather restore old typewriters and beloved books. When cinema’s hottest superhero, Matt Bane, enters their store to buy some personalized notecards, it’s hard not to be starstruck.

But when Clare sees the police leading Matt out of The Fountain hotel in handcuffs only a few hours later, she can’t believe her eyes. The affable actor is accused of killing his sister, but Clare’s convinced he’s wrong for that role. Now it’s open call for suspects as Clare tries to reel in the killer before another victim fades to black…

My honest review:

I was so happy to dive back into Star City, Utah. The cozy ski town is the setting of the Dangerous Type Mysteries, and it instantly feels like home when you read the first page. It also made me crave some serious snow, but we won’t go into all that right now.

This book finds Star City filled with celebrities and movie lovers for the annual film festival. I can only imagine what it would be like to have your town filled with movie stars for a week. Shopping at your local grocery store, grabbing coffee at the nearest cafe, and browsing at your favorite bookstore. I have to give credit to the residents of Star City, they all behave very well considering all the famous people who have flocked to their tiny town.

The story line of Bookman  Dead Style is multi layered. A murder happens quite soon into the novel, but a few petty crimes also get interwoven. It added extra dimension which I really appreciated. The way the plot is laid out you kind of don’t trust anyone who pops up throughout the book. Well except for our regular Star City residents. They are as trusty as ever, and I love them even more in this second novel.

The book also really showed the budding relationship between Clare and Seth. They are SO good together. Seth eagerly accepts Clare’s natural curiosity and need to snoop.  I really hope their relationship continues to grow as the series progresses. I will heartbroken if they break up!

The ending of the book was pretty clean. Most loose ends were tied up. However, on one of the last pages a bit of a snag with a local really has me antsy for book 3. I won’t give anything away, but someone is not being a very honest person….. How’s that for suspense?! In all seriousness I truly love this series. It keeps you guessing while also taking you on a stroll through possibly the cutest ski town in Utah.
